Appendix viiiCCRC PO Box 623 Rutherfordton, North Carolina 28139-0623 828-287-4429 Mr. Jonathan B. Howes-Secretary Department of Environment and Natural Resources-DENR PO Box 27687 Raleigh, North Carolina 27611-7687 July 3, 1997 Dear Mr. Howes: Thank you so much for your letter dated June 26, 1997. Our group greatly appreciates your timely response to our meeting with you in May and also the letter that we sent to you. We will look forward to participating and helping in any way that we can with the direct and indirect environmental impact study on chip wood mill production in North Carolina. We also will appreciate the opportunity to have a public hearing on the general storm water permit, which comes up for review and/or reissue in the fall. Since the Fish and Wildlife Service has become involved in wanting to carry out a study on the secondary impacts caused from this mill, we feel that it is imperative that the US Army Corps of Engineers complies with this request. We will certainly look forward to hearing what kind of dialogue will ensue between DENR and the Corps. We understand that if an individual Section 401 Certification is required for the Broad River Chip Mill site, the Division of Water Quality will hold a public hearing. We would definitely want to be part of that hearing. We also know that Willamette Industries is trying very hard to get in under the specifications of this 401 permit so that they will not have to apply for this certification. We are wondering if there is anything that DENR can do under the confines of the agency to help stop further physical changes on the site? On July 9, our group will be making a trip to Raleigh. We will look forward to meeting with Mr. Henry Lancaster, Mr. Dan Whittle, and other members of your staff. Again, thank you for your time and consideration on this important matter. Sincerely, Lynne Faltraco |
