Tips on Working with Volunteers

• Once a person volunteers, ask him or her immediately to do something else and gradually take on more responsibility.
• Spend time with the persons who have the most potential.
• Listen to folks and truly get to know them.

Types of Jobs for Volunteers

At Office

• Call other volunteers.
• Media work
• Put together a media notebook
• Prep visuals/materials for news conferences
• Write letters to the editor (editorials)
• Research schedules for targets for meetings.
• Copy volunteer names off petitions.
• Track/mail petitions/letters.
• Put up/create wall charts and visual materials.
• Update files and databases.

At Home

• Write a letter to the editor or a letter to your target.
• Take petitions to church groups, clubs or post at favorite hangouts and collect signatures.
• Set up a phone tree with friends for letter writing.
• Host a house party.
