Outreach Tactics
Outreach and public involvement are the most important building blocks for any grassroots organization.
Why Do Outreach?
- To create visibility for the campaign and to build numbers.
- To accomplish program goals.
- To encourage people to think about issues.
- To help us keep in touch with what people are thinking.
- To bring in new people, get people together, and increase the sense of team effort.
Outreach Tactics
| Public speaking | Letters to agencies | Meetings | Building networks |
| Phone calling | E-mail | Volunteers | Lobbying |
| Petitioning | Coalitions | Media | Socials |
Motivating People
- Make a connection with potential activists. Talk with them, not at them, and listen.
- Put everything into context. Never assume people know anything about who you are and why you are involved-introduce yourself and explain the campaign or issues.
- Build committees from new activists. You should feel comfortable asking why someone is not getting involved.
- Make sure people know the game plan for the future. Every time someone leaves an event or activity, you should know what he or she is doing next.
Tips
- Reach out to a broad constituency. Do not rely on those who are already predisposed.
- Establish a basic simple message for outreach.
- Follow up with new activists immediately.
- Use other networks.
- Thank your activists. Make sure they know how important their work is.
